Summary

Told in a series of letters, this true story of the correspondence between a New York writer and a London bookseller has touched the hearts of thousands.
©1970 Helene Hanff (P)2007 Hachette Audio

Critic reviews

"The twenty year correspondence between bookseller Frank Doel, who worked at Marks & Co, specialists in rare and second-hand books, and Helene Hanff, an impoverished New York writer with an irresistible urge to buy books, made joyous reading when it first appeared in 1970 and this unabridged recording of 84 Charing Cross Road makes pleasant listening." ( The Express)
"Human kindness is wonderfully to the fore in this little classic of autobiography, and the combined readings of Juliet Stevenson and John Nettles characterise the writers exquisitely." ( The Times)
"One of the subtlest, sharpest, most moving relationships ever formed between pen pals. I can't imagine it without Stevenson and Nettles. Her warmth, his reticence, their shared love of old books - onionskin pages, leather-bound and gold-embossed, with flyleaf dedications circa 1847 and pencilled notes in the margin - made me weep."( The Guardian)

A charming book

Although I had heard of 84 Charing Cross Road I didn't listen to it until a friend mentioned it in our regular correspondence (how apt!) and I decided I'd see what she was talking about! I have a love of books of letters and this one didn't disappoint at all, Juliet Stevenson and John Nettles read extremely well, their characterisations was perfect. It is a charming story of a (sadly) bygone age and very enjoyable. I really enjoyed the producer chatting with the readers about the book at the end as well. Highly recommended!

Just wonderful!

This has always been one of my favourite books, and the reading is excellent. John Nettles is perfect casting for Frank and Juliet Stevenson does a marvelous job as Helene. It's short, but perfect and I smiled to myself the entire time. Well worth an audible credit!!!

Charming

A totally unique and easy to listen to book. I loved the accents and feeling drawn back to the time period the letters relate to. I presume some letters are missing as there are some gaps but this does not take away from the story. I read a little more into the life of Helen Hanff and it was nice to learn (post letters) a bit more of the story. A very easy way to pass a couple of hours. Recommended!

Love by mail

What a wonderful story. It was like waiting on the doorstep for the next letter to arrive. You could almost imagine rows and rows of books in a tiny shop. It was a love story yet, it wasn't. It was a lovely story.

beautiful story

really liked this book, not do much at the beginning but at the end it made sense. John Nettles narrates beautifully.

John Nettles didn’t do it for me 🙁

A well known story I have read and seen the film. Juliet Stephenson was fine in her reading, but I did not take to John Nettles narration, perhaps it’s just a personal idiosyncracy.

Perfection - the narration is sublime

Beautifully performed.

This is a delight from start to finish. Not a long listen at 2 hours and 11 minutes, but one that I will return to time and again!

Truly lovely

in the 1960s I worked in Tavistock Square and my bus home took me past 84 Charing X Road, although I regret never stopping to go in. The whole dialogue so eloquently and well read was a delight from beg to end and I have just bought the DVD too so I can continue to wallow. This book will be listened to again and again. Thank you Juliet and John for your excellent portrayals.
