About this listen
A Recorded Books Audio Original production of songs and stories performed by Dolly herself, Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics goes beyond the glitz, glamour, and rhinestones to the warmth, heart, and soul of a treasured pop-culture icon.
In this exclusive audio performance, the 10-time Grammy Award-winning artist weaves her words with music and memories to give listeners the stories behind the stories of her most cherished songs. And with some 3,000 songs to her credit, Dolly uses her gift for lyrics to connect to people of all genders, generations, and geographies.
Showcasing nearly 100 of her most popular songs, including “Jolene”, “I Will Always Love You”, “9 to 5”, and “Coat of Many Colors”, to name a few, this one-of-a-kind audio experience delivers answers to fans’ most burning questions: How close did Dolly come to singing “I Will Always Love You” as a duet with Elvis? How did she become an actress? And exactly who was Jolene?
Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics is a must-have memoir for fans of country music, music history, and (of course!) Dolly herself.

And now I'd love to meet Dolly and have a cuppa and a natter with her! What a delightful woman. She's an absolute ray of sunshine with a great sense of humour that shines through the entire interview (no pun intended).
I was a little taken aback at first at the interview style of the book, rather than the traditional format, but very quickly stopped noticing it. The thing I found most fascinating is just how devout Dolly is - but in a really good way (not the bible-bashing way of some of my own family). For having the life and experiences she's had, it's remarkable how decent a Christian she seems to be - someone the church could really do with having more of. But don't let talk of her faith put you off listening... in this age of extremism it's refreshing to listen to someone who is confident enough to talk about her faith simply as the basis for her music, without any of the fundamentalism or extremism that seems to grip so much of the world at the mere mention of God or Jesus!
Almost every chapter has a clip of one of her songs and most chapters have something about the song chosen - the inspiration, where and how she wrote it, who with, or why she loves it (every one of her songs is her favourite or has her favourite line in... it's very sweet to hear her pride in her work). She also discusses her family, her collaborators, her book-gifting charity, and her other work as an actress and composer of musicals.
Definitely recommended to fans and non-fans alike, especially if looking to listen to someone who can put a smile on your face on a bleak day - just through being herself!
Not a Dolly fan but loved this
