本書の主旨は、みなさんが正しい目的に向かって力いっぱい努力すること―、苦労や苦しみ、屈辱から逃れることも、他者からの支援や保護に頼りきることもなく、自分自身で活路を切り開けるように導くことだ。自分自身を助けることは、突き詰めて考えれば、周囲の人を助けることにつながる。本書で取り上げたさまざまな実例――文学者や科学者、芸術家、発明家、教育家、慈善家、宣教師、殉教者たちの生き様―を見れば、それが分かるはずである。優れた人物が、自らの理想を追求するなかで失敗することはもちろんある。しかし、失敗しようと思って失敗したわけでもなければ、失敗してよかったと考えているわけでもない。よからぬことを追求して成功するのは恥ずべきことだが、理想を追求して失敗するのは名誉なことである。しかし、理想を追求して成功するほうがそれよりもっといい。どんな場合でも一番大事なのは結果ではなく、その目的であり、価値ある目的の実現に向けて注ぐ努力と忍耐、勇気、不屈の闘志である。真に価値あることは、勇気ある挑戦なくしては達成できない。人間の成長はひとえに、困難に積極的に立ち向かおうとする意志の力、すなわち気概いかんにかかっている。一見不可能に思えることが、意志の力によって可能になるケースは驚くほど多い。強く望みさえすれば、それだけで可能性は現実へと変わる。強い願望は、いずれそれができるという自信へとつながることが多いのだ。逆に、臆病で優柔不断な人間には何事も不可能に見え、それだけで実現を遠ざける。
