Maud is an irascible 88-year-old Swedish woman with no family, no friends, and...no qualms about a little murder. That was how Maud learned that good things can come from tragedy. Now in her late 80s, Maud contents herself with traveling the world and surfing the net from the comfort of her father's ancient armchair. It's a solitary existence, and she likes it that way. 

When a British heir hunter fails to return home after a trip to Malmö, Inspector Anita Sundström doesn't want to get entangled in a simple missing persons case. I början av 2000-talet drabbades Sverige av en enorm våg av spektakulära rån. Det har skrivits mycket om grova rån, men nästan uteslutande ur polisens perspektiv. Här möter vi erfarna rånare som berättar om förberedelserna, vad som händer under tiden rånen pågår och hur de agerar när de kommit över pengarna. Anders Adali skildrar också sina egna erfarenheter. Under många år levde han ett dubbelliv som vanlig familjefar och grov brottsling. Allt fick ett slut när han dömdes till sju års fängelse för ett rån i Finland 2007. Domen blev en vändpunkt i Anders liv.

Direktören för en ledande, dansk läkemedelsfirma ligger död i sin bil på en parkeringsplats. Inte långt därifrån hittas även den ghostwriter som direktören har anställt för att skriva hans självbiografi i en pöl av sitt eget blod. Polisinspektör Lene Jensen tilldelas fallet och det visar sig snart ha anknytningar till hennes eget familjeliv på ett sätt som hon aldrig kunnat ana. Samtidigt har Michael Sander blivit insnärjd i ett nätverk där internationell brottslighet, kliniska likvideringar och en diskutabel syn på rätt och fel tvingar ut honom på riktigt djupt vatten.

En kall januarinatt försvinner taxichauffören Jens Hummel spårlöst. Det går ett halvår utan att man hittar någon ledtråd. William Wisting, som ansvarar för utredningen, får kritik i media och av överordnade för uteblivna resultat. Wistings dotter Line, som tagit ledigt från jobbet och snart ska föda sitt första barn, har fått en ny vän: Sofie, ensamstående mamma med en ettårig dotter. Sofie har ärvt ett hus efter sin morfar, Frank Mandt, som polisen länge misstänkt för diverse skumraskaffärer.
