Ripped away from his beloved, native New York, ten-year-old Ishmael Abias finds himself a victim of cruel bullies in his new home, a bigoted, openly-racist slice of small-town America. The child of an interracial marriage between strict, emotionless parents, Ishmael increasingly retreats into his own imagination and daydreams to escape from an everyday life in which his only solace is his little sister, Sarah, and the only student at school who treats him as a human being - the sweet, ever-caring Claire.-

In 1895, William James, the father of American philosophy, delivered a lecture entitled "Is Life Worth Living?" It was no theoretical question for James, who had contemplated suicide during an existential crisis as a young man a quarter century earlier. Sick Souls, Healthy Minds is a compelling introduction to James's life and thought that shows why the founder of pragmatism and empirical psychology -and an inspiration for Alcoholics Anonymous - can still speak so directly and profoundly to anyone struggling to make a life worth living.

In this revelatory study, neuroscientist Helen Pilcher explores the hidden impact of the "nocebo effect"—the placebo's evil twin. Medical studies have proven the nocebo effect to cause pain, nausea, paralysis, seizures, and even blindness. The nocebo effect impacts how we grow sick and grow old, explains why people who don't have food allergies have dietary intolerances, and why adults and teenagers are equally susceptible to catching tics through social media.

You don’t need to look far to find books promising the ‘crushing’, ‘conquering’, ‘taming’ or ‘mastering’ of worry and anxiety. If you are amongst the many millions of people dealing with such issues I see the appeal, but why aren’t these same books bestsellers? Maybe it's because people are more savvy. Hinting at or claiming cures for anxiety is misleading. Why? Well, anxiety can’t be cured. It’s part of the human condition. It’s hard-wired, baked-in, call it what you will. Without it, we’d be in a real mess — but it can, and does, get out of control.
