A Christmas Carol is one of the few English Christmas tales. It is a joyful prose hymn involving ghosts and ending with a Christmas miracle. Christmas Eve is the first story in the second volume of the collection Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka by Nikolai Gogol. The story opens with a description of the winter scenery of Dikanka, Ukraine, a witch flying across the night sky and the devil stealing the moon and hiding it in his pocket, first playing with it in the sky, which no one in the village notices. Since it is the night before Christmas, the devil is free to roam around and torment people as he pleases, so he decides to find a way to get back at the village blacksmith, Vakula, because he paints religious art in the church.

Hear two stories by the great Russian master Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852). "Christmas Eve" is a funny, biting satire of small-town life. "Viy" is a horror story involving three students from a seminary and their encounters with the supernatural.

This short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky was first published in 1848. A man walking past a wedding is reminded of a children’s New Year’s Eve party he attended 5 years previously – a party that was clearly an excuse for the parents to make advantageous connections in a casual setting. As an outsider at the party, he was able to observe the guests in greater detail than most, and took particular note of the children playing by the Christmas tree, and the social hierarchy they unwittingly participated in. This recording is based on the 1918 translation by Constance Garnett.

"White Nights" (1848) features a nameless and lonely narrator who, though he resides in a big city, lives largely in his own head.
