The Deadlands

Beyond the smoke-choked skies of an apocalyptic United States, a woman travels the desolate railroad tracks of a small town in search of revenge and a quiet place to settle. Her only companion is an undead fox: animated with backwoods herbal magic and the soul of a middle-aged father who died before the world fell into darkness.

Once upon a time, a woman thought she made peace with her grief. As she tended the dying land, she befriended a fox: a symbol that reminded her of her beloved father who died at the hands of a selfish doctor. But grief is perennial and after she loses her new friend, she discovers hope was just an illusion, too. Magic meanders back into her life and with it, a hunger for retribution unlike any felt before.

Acceptance is impossible: a state of being those left behind eventually stumble to through the haze of loss. For Hugh, it's something to be held at arm's-length. He can't let go of his lost husband nor his stranded daughter. So, he cycles through the first four stages of grief over and over while killing in the name of a despicable man. The apathy keeps him alive.
