About this listen

In a world where magic has disappeared, rival nations vie for power in a continent devastated by war.

When a young farm girl named Livia demonstrates magical powers for the first time in a century, there are many across the land that will kill to obtain her power. Duke Gothelm's tallymen, the blood-soaked Qeltine Brotherhood, and cynical mercenary Josten Cade: All are searching for Livia and the power she wields.

But Livia finds that guardians can come from the most unlikely places...and that the old gods are returning to a world they abandoned.

This story was jarring at points. found it hard to see who the bad guys were and then random vivid sex scenes.

this was compared to Sanderson, I think that was a mistake this is nothing like his work. don't think I will be reading more of the serriies.

not the best but not the worst

Kinda slow start, a lot of stories intertwined till it makes sense, but it's worth it. The narrator did a superb job. Comparison with Abercrombie? I don't know, Abercrombie is a master with building characters, which is not the case here. It is gory, too much at the point of describing torturing and killing children. It could go without it, it doesn't do any good for the story value.
Other than that it is a decent plot, interesting twists, as I said - quite good foe a freebie

I nearly returned the book in the first hour of listening as I’d had to restart three times to take in the story. But I’m glad I stuck with it. A combination of three character storylines come together at the end, which I found to be a bit of a let down after the journey of the characters. But there are some really lovely moments and some so sad I nearly cried. I’ll look for more books by the author.

Took a while to get into but worth persevering

It's not a bad book, it's well narrated, but I just don't really care enough to keep going with this series. Not sure what it is, the characters are not sparking a wish to read more and three story is just a little boring. I'm no doubt being harsh as I can't put my finger on specifics.

Just not invested in this series

I never managed to get into this book. most notably the tension was just poor. If a character started narrating about how they were going to die, then you knew they weren't going to at that point, but the melodrama kept flowing. If a character ever actually made a decision, then you know it was going to work out poorly for them.
Then there is the problem of the power balances. There are rarely any situations where one character is comparable in power/competence to another so fights are very one sided and usually there to demonstrate the character's power level.
Finally there is the plot. It's more of a pointless meandering towards a starting point. I know this is just one book in a series, but really, if you only ready the first chapter then skipped to the last couple you'd have missed nothing.
It's probably not bad, but it wasn't for me.

A drag to inevitability

If you're not a fan of tropes I'm unsure how you got here? Anyway, this has them in spades; prophesy, redemption, brutality...all that good stuff.

I'd say this was more Abercrombie than Sanderson - real grim vibes akin to Berzerk. Thoroughly enjoyable, actual stakes, great world building & baddies that actually felt truly malevolent.

Don't be put off by the sex, its not as prevalent as others have commented but it is quite graphic.

Well worth a listen - especially for free.

BLOOD, SEX & MAGIC

Well written, fabulous characters and more twists than a run on river rapids. Highly recommended. Looking forward to the next book with great anticipation.

Great fun

A world wind adventure introducing some interesting characters, classical fantasy tropes with a twist. The plot is a little meandering at times but it all comes together satisfactorily in the end. Recommend a read if you’re looking for a well written fantastical adventure.

Fantastically descriptive writing

This is an awesome epic read. I simply could not put it down. It is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Even had me laughing out loud at times.

The author is merciless and no character is safe.

Epic
