Jonathan has gone to England for a vacation, but it is interrupted when British Intelligence needs him for his highly skilled services. Jonathan must take over the mission of an agent whose murder was so bizarre and terrifying that no other agent was willing to replace him. His task is to locate a set of secretly made films that incriminate a number of high-ranking British officials. His target is a top underworld figure who delights in debauchery and torture.

En représailles du meurtre d'un agent du CII, Jonathan doit infliger une nouvelle sanction. Sa cible fait partie d'une équipe qui va tenter l'ascension d'une des plus dangereuses montagnes des Alpes, l'Eiger par la face Nord. Hemlock se joint à cette expédition en vue d'exécuter sa mission. Seul problème : il ignore lequel de ses trois compagnons de cordée est l'homme à abattre.

Nicholaï Hel est l'assassin le plus doué de son époque et l'homme le plus recherché du monde. Son secret réside dans sa détermination à atteindre une forme rare d'excellence personnelle : le shibumi. Après avoir été élevé dans le Japon de l'après-guerre et initié à l'art subtil du go, il est désormais retiré dans sa forteresse du Pays basque.
