When a new disease turns people into sadistic, laughing killers, a light infantry battalion fights to maintain order in Boston. As infection spreads, the Army loses control, and the soldiers find themselves fighting the people they once swore to protect. As the country slides into violent collapse, the lost battalion learns the last bastion of the federal government is still holding out in Florida. Harry Lee, its commander, decides the only hope is to lead the survivors there.

It started in the Middle East. A flu-like plague that infected thousands and killed roughly 10 percent of its victims. Those who died awoke once again, but they were no longer among the living - they came back as soulless, carnivorous corpses who desired only one thing: to feed on living human flesh. The citizens of Single Tree, California, want the stenches and those fleeing them to ignore the town long enough for it to be transformed.... But time is not on their side.

The United States of America is falling before the armies of the dead. Leading the sole survivors of the US Army's 10th Mountain Division out of the overrun city of New York, Captain Phil Hastings heads for the safety of Fort Indiantown Gap, a National Guard training facility deep in the woodlands of Pennsylvania. Joining with other remnants of the military, government, and civilian communities, Hastings and his men must try to keep the tsunami of corpses from taking over the world and plan the resurrection of the nation.

Overrun and forced to escape the killing grounds of Fort Indiantown Gap, the survivors of the 10th Mountain Division once again find themselves on the road, in search of sanctuary from the threat of the reekers. With a new plan in hand, Captain Phil Hastings, Master Sergeant Slater, and the acting president of the United States, Henry Cornell, lead their group of remaining forces toward Fort Bragg, NC, in an effort to enact Contingency operations that will save the United States from the clutches of the dead.

Emerging from the smoking ruins of Boston, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lee leads the First Battalion, 55th Infantry Regiment on a perilous trek to its besieged home post of Fort Drum. Along the way, the unit must battle through the legions of diseased killers lying in wait, evading clever ambushes and fighting through terrifying attacks. Lee struggles to hold the battalion together while epitomizing its motto, "Bounding Forward".   

In this engaging and deeply informed audiobook, Stephen Knight looks at the different manifestations of Robin Hood at different times and places in a mythic biography with a thematic structure. The best way to get at the essence of the Robin Hood myth, Knight believes, is in terms not of chronological and generic progression but of the purposes served by heroes.

The City of Brotherly Love is currently under the protection of General Anthony Bell, commander of the famed 56th Stryker Brigade, the Independence Brigade. But in a world gone mad, nothing is as it seems. And when Bell has Lee arrested and put up on charges, it’s up to Lee’s right-hand man, Major Chris Walker, to pick up the pieces. Can he snatch Lee from the hangman’s noose, and can he guide his troops and his civilian charges through the gathering horde of maniacal killers? Or will they all die laughing?  

During the long retreat out of Philadelphia, First Battalion arrives at High Point Special Facility, the Alamo of the US government. Lt. Colonel Lee secures the fort built around the facility but learns of an outbreak in the underground bunker, where the US government is hiding. The president has been infected. While thousands of laughing infected lay siege to the facility, Sergeant Muldoon, Corporal Rawlings, and a platoon of lightfighters go deep into the bowels of the earth on a deadly mission: terminate the president of the United States. The president is waiting.

New York City has fallen to the zombie horde. The greatest city on Earth, once home to millions of Americans, is now firmly in the grasp of the dead. First Sergeant David Gartrell is cut off and alone in the city, miles away from the nearest military units which might be able to assist. Together with a frightened woman and her young son, Gartrell sets out to accomplish his final objective: Find a way to leave the city of the gathering dead, or perish at the hands - and teeth! - of the ravenous horde.

Traveling from Boston to ill-fated Fort Drum, then on to Philadelphia, and again to Mount Weather and Fort Stewart, the First Battalion, 55th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light) is run out, blown out, and virtually waiting for death's embrace. Now at the border of Georgia and Florida, the battalion receives new orders.

The world had less than seven hours to prepare. When it hit, the coronal mass ejection from the sun rolled back hundreds of years of technological innovation. Airplanes fell from the skies. Power grids crashed. Even electrical cabling was turned to slag. No Internet. No cable TV. No electricity. No modern day conveniences of any kind, from fancy European sedans to smart phones to clean, running water.

The Sixty Minute War brought humanity to the brink of annihilation. Billions perished. The planet Earth was turned into a virtual graveyard, with the shattered, burned-out skeletons of great cities serving as tombstones marking Mankind’s demise. But in the United States, one final outpost remains. Harmony is America's last chance to rise up from the ashes of the nuclear holocaust and help restore civilization. But only if Andrews and his crew can escape San Jose... and the madman who calls himself The Law.
