The United States of America is falling before the armies of the dead. Leading the sole survivors of the US Army's 10th Mountain Division out of the overrun city of New York, Captain Phil Hastings heads for the safety of Fort Indiantown Gap, a National Guard training facility deep in the woodlands of Pennsylvania. Joining with other remnants of the military, government, and civilian communities, Hastings and his men must try to keep the tsunami of corpses from taking over the world and plan the resurrection of the nation.

When a new disease turns people into sadistic, laughing killers, a light infantry battalion fights to maintain order in Boston. Traveling from Boston to ill-fated Fort Drum, then on to Philadelphia, and again to Mount Weather and Fort Stewart, the First Battalion, 55th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light) is run out, blown out, and virtually waiting for death's embrace. Now at the border of Georgia and Florida, the battalion receives new orders.

During the long retreat out of Philadelphia, First Battalion arrives at High Point Special Facility, the Alamo of the US government. Lt. Colonel Lee secures the fort built around the facility but learns of an outbreak in the underground bunker, where the US government is hiding. The president has been infected. While thousands of laughing infected lay siege to the facility, Sergeant Muldoon, Corporal Rawlings, and a platoon of lightfighters go deep into the bowels of the earth on a deadly mission: terminate the president of the United States. The president is waiting.

After securing High Point Special Facility, Colonel Lee and his lightfighters of Tenth Mountain have been shot up, run out, and worn down. But another mission awaits - roll to Fort Stewart and extract Dr. Courtney Moreau, one of the engineers of the virus now devastating humanity, and whose immunity promises a fast track to a vaccine. The bad news: Fort Stewart is under siege.

The world had less than seven hours to prepare. When it hit, the coronal mass ejection from the sun rolled back hundreds of years of technological innovation. Airplanes fell from the skies.
