'The Praise of Folly', written in Latin in 1509 and spoken by the goddess Folly (who champions a lively enjoyment of life), was a bold satire on (in the cautious contemporary environment) not only Western classical traditions but also the Catholic Church. Dedicated to More himself, Erasmus wittily challenged entrenched views in so forthright (and humanist) a style that it could have brought him in direct conflict with the papacy. Fortunately the pope, Leo X, enjoyed the humour and the challenge!

The Praise of Folly is a hilarious satirical essay on various superstitions and irrational beliefs held by European society and the Roman Catholic Church at the time of Desiderius Erasmus. The narrator is Folly and her attendants include Philautia (Self Love), Kolakia (Flattery), Lethe (Forgetfulness), and Anoia (Imbecility).

Moriae encomium, zu Deutsch: Lob der Torheit (oder Lob der Narrheit), ist der Titel eines der bekanntesten Werke des niederländischen Humanisten Erasmus von Rotterdam. Das Werk, ein herausragendes, zu seiner Zeit wirkmächtiges Beispiel der Narrenliteratur, ist auch als Laus stultitiae bekannt. Es wurde eines der meistgelesenen Bücher der Weltliteratur und wurde schon zu Lebzeiten des Erasmus in viele europäische Sprachen übersetzt, denn Satiren waren in der Renaissance die bevorzugte Literatur der Gebildeten.
