Zeppo di umorismo pungente e di allusioni classiche, L'elogio della follia è una parodia che ha riscosso enorme successo già ai tempi di Erasmo stesso e ha inaspettatamente spianato la strada per gli inizi della riforma protestante.
Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (circa 1466-1536) è stato uno studioso umanista olandese. Figura di spicco del Rinascimento nordeuropeo, è stato il primo editore del Nuovo Testamento e ha scritto opere significative come Adagia, De libero arbitrio, Elogio della follia e Enchiridion militis christiani.
