Dans "Félifax", publié à l'origine en 1929, le fils de Paul Féval s'est donné pour tâche presque impossible de rassembler deux archétypes : Sir Eric Palmer, le grand détective britannique, successeur de Sherlock Holmes, contre Félifax, né dans la jungle, tiger-man, un clone littéraire de Tarzan, dans l'espoir de générer une synergie singulière. Contrairement à la grande majorité des imitations Tarzan, Félifax n'est pas un enfant sauvage mais quelque chose de tout à fait nouveau et révolutionnaire.

Ce petit homme sec, sanglé dans un costume bleu de coupe impeccable, n'est autre que Robespierre, l'Incorruptible ! Et celui-là, avec son sans-gêne, son débraillé, c'est Fouquier Tinville, l'accusateur public. Ce jeune homme maigre, au regard fiévreux, c'est le citoyen Bonaparte. D'autres encore vivent familièrement sous nos yeux, les Tallien, les Barras, les Fouché... Car nous sommes en Thermidor, an II. En cet âge d'or de l'intrigue et de la conspiration, un personnage étrange, une femme joue un rôle passionnant, anime tous ces grands hommes qui tiennent le devant de la scène, s'en fait aimer ou haïr.

La suite des aventures de la famille Lagardère. Nous sommes en 1763, Philippe, dit sergent Belle Epée a épousé Olympe de Chaville. Des jumeaux sont nés de cette union: un garçon nommé Henri et une fille Blanche. Cette dernière est victime d'un enlèvement et amenée près du roi Louis XV dans la demeure du Parc-aux-Cerfs. Fin du XIXe siècle et début du XXe, Paul Féval fils créa de toutes pièces (sous de nombreux titres) une famille généalogique à Henri de Lagardère, dans une suite extravagante d'aventures nouvelles du "petit parisien".

Comment ce jeune et brillant sergent des gardes françaises, qui n'a pour identité qu'un simple prénom, Philippe, parviendra-t-il à retrouver sa véritable origine ? Il peut compter sur l'aide loyale de Cocardasse, maître bretteur expert en coups subtils et bottes secrètes, et sur son inséparable Passepoil. Mais ce "bon M. de Peyrolles" n'hésitera pas à lui porter dans l'ombre des coups propres à abattre son ardeur et son courage.

Cette histoire n'a qu'un mérite qui lui sera peut-être contesté, celui d'être vraie. L'histoire de Marguerite est une exception, je le répète ; Mais si c'eut été une généralité ce n'eut pas été la peine de l'écrire.
