The Temple is a short story written by H. P. Lovecraft in 1920, and first published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales #24 in September 1925. The story is narrated as a "found manuscript" penned by Karl Heinrich, Graf von Altberg-Ehrenstein, a lieutenant-commander in the Imperial German Navy during the days of World War I. Altberg begins by declaring that he has decided to document the events leading up to his untimely end in order to "set certain facts" before the public, aware that he will not survive to do so himself.

Ein Hungerkünstler ist eine Erzählung von Franz Kafka, die erstmals 1922 in der Zeitung Die neue Rundschau erschien. Gleichzeitig ist es der Titel für den 1924 erschienenen Sammelband des Autors, der noch drei weitere Prosatexte enthielt. Drei der vier Erzählungen haben jeweils eine ironische Sicht auf das Künstlerleben zum Inhalt, wobei in zwei Fällen Zirkusfiguren gewählt wurden. Vor und nach der Jahrhundertwende war die Verwendung von Gauklern und Artisten, also Vertreter eher halbseidener Künste, in der Literatur sehr häufig. In der Strafkolonie ist eine Erzählung von Franz Kafka, die im Oktober 1914 entstand und 1919 veröffentlicht wurde. Einem Forschungsreisenden wird das Rechtssystem einer Strafkolonie vorgeführt. Es besteht darin, dass jeder Angeklagte nach Festlegung des Urteils, das nicht angezweifelt werden kann, von einem Apparat in minutiösem Ablauf stundenlang gefoltert und dann getötet wird. Was er zu beherzigen habe, wird ihm in den Leib eingeschrieben. Der bei einer Vorführung anwesende Forschungsreisende verlässt nach dem unerwarteten Ausgang der Exekution umgehend die Insel.

Das Urteil (Untertitel: Eine Geschichte für Felice B.) ist eine 1912 (in der Nacht vom 22. auf den 23. September) entstandene und 1913 veröffentlichte Novelle von Franz Kafka. Die Erzählung hat den Charakter einer Novelle und handelt von einem Vater-Sohn-Konflikt. Georg Bendemann, Sohn eines Kaufmanns, verlobt und kurz vor der Heirat stehend, korrespondiert brieflich mit seinem – aus seiner Sicht – glücklosen Freund in Petersburg. Um ihn zu schonen, verschweigt Georg in seinen Briefen viel von seinem eigenen erfolgreichen Leben.

Franz Kafka steht in dem Ruf, daß er sein Werk vor der Öffentlichkeit habe verstecken wollen und zu jeder Publikation von außen habe gedrängt werden müssen. Um so erstaunlicher ist es, daß ein Buchprojekt, das er selbst ins Auge gefaßt hat, bis heute nicht realisiert worden ist. Im Frühjahr 1913 schlägt Kafka dem Verleger Kurt Wolff vor, das Urteil, den Heizer und die Verwandlung in einem Novellenband unter dem Titel Die Söhne zusammenzufassen, und bittet darum, die Formulierung eines solchen "Versprechens in den jetzigen Vertrag über den Heizer aufzunehmen".

Short story The Blue Cross is Chesterton's first Father Brown mystery. It introduces the characters Flambeau and Valentin. It is unique among the Father Brown mysteries in that it does not follow the actions of the Father himself, but rather those of Valentin. Brown has been committing acts to draw the attention of the police (throwing soup, knocking over apples, smashing a window) and leaving an obvious trail for them to follow. Valentin takes this opportunity to emerge from hiding with the policemen and arrest Flambeau. Both Flambeau and Valentin bow to Father Brown's superior detective skills.

"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" is an 1865 short story by Mark Twain. It was his first great success as a writer and brought him national attention. The story has also been published as "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" (its original title) and "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". In it, the narrator retells a story he heard from a bartender, Simon Wheeler, at the Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, about the gambler Jim Smiley.

"The Masque of the Red Death", originally published as "The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy", is an 1842 short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The story follows Prince Prospero's attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, hosts a masquerade ballwithin seven rooms of the abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters and makes his way through each of the rooms.

The short story Sis' Becky's Pickaninny of "The Conjure Woman" now follows John as he reproaches McAdoo for all of his superstitious beliefs and how they lack foundation, commenting that these traditions are the reason why Southern Black people are destined for a life of continued acquiescence and little prosperity. This opinion stemmed from McAdoo's assertion that carrying a rabbit foot leads to good luck. John is concerned for Annie's health, since the main reason they moved to the countryside was to improve her health due to her current bouts of depression and anxiety.

Po' Sandy is a second short story from The Conjure Woman, was published in The Atlantic in 1888. It follows the same frame narrative as the previous one with Julius McAdoo advising John against following through with his plans of demolishing a schoolhouse to build a kitchen. In this short story, Sandy is an enslaved man owned by Mars Marrabo McSwayne, who sends Sandy to travel to help friends and families. During one of Sandy's trips, McSwayne sells Sandy's wife and replaces her for another woman named Tenie.

The Goophered Grapevine is the first short story from The Conjure Woman, published in The Atlantic in August 1887, told to the narrator by Julius McAdoo, a former enslaved man who lives on the plantation that the narrator, John, and his wife, Annie, visit one day. Set in Patesville, North Carolina, John and Annie moved there for an improvement in his wife's health and to seek other business opportunities. Knowing that the couple wanted to purchase the property, McAdoo advises them not to do so, informing them that when Dugal McAdoo, the previous master, purchased the property, it was very rich in wine production because of its vineyards.

The Negro Problem is classic collection of essays, edited by Booker T. Washington and with contributions from many of post-Civil War America's other prominent African-American thinkers, sought to redefine the role of Black persons in the new Jim Crow era and beat back white supremacy through racial uplift. Seven essays include Charles Chesnutt's The Disfranchisement of the Negro, W. E. B. DuBois "The Talented Tenth", and Wilford Horace Smith's "The Negro and the Law".

The Wife of His Youth is a short story by American author Charles W. Chesnutt, first published in July 1898. It later served as the title story of the collection The Wife of His Youth and Other Stories of the Color-Line. That book was first published in 1899, the same year Chesnutt published his short story collection The Conjure Woman. The Wife of His Youth features an upwardly mobile, light-skinned mulatto man who is a respected member of the Blue Veins Society in a Midwestern city.

Charles Chesnutt's The Doll is a story of seeking truth, facing discrimination, and making bold choices for the sake of one's own livelihood. The Doll, depicts the African American barber as a human character by showing him struggle with and simply show human thoughts and emotions. The story takes place during a time of huge racial prejudice, a time in which some people did not even consider African Americans to be human

The Tell-Tale Heart is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe first published in 1843. It follows an unnamed narrator who insists on his sanity after murdering an old man with a "vulture eye". The murder is carefully calculated, and the murderer hides the body by cutting it into pieces and hiding it under the floorboards. Ultimately the narrator's guilt manifests itself in the hallucination that the man's heart is still beating under the floorboards. The story was first published in James Russell Lowell's The Pioneer in January 1843.

The Purloined Letter is a short story by American author Edgar Allan Poe. It is the third of his three detective stories featuring the fictional C. Auguste Dupin, the other two being "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt". These stories are considered to be important early forerunners of the modern detective story. It first appeared in the literary annual The Gift for 1845 (1844) and soon was reprinted in numerous journals and newspapers.
