Збірка казок Івана Франка під назвою Коли ще звірі говорили перший раз вийшла ще у 1899 р., друге видання з'явилось у 1903 році. До цієї збірки Франко додає передмову, в якій писав: "Оці байки, що зібрані в тій книжечці, то старе народне добро... Вони найбільше відповідають смакові дітей від 6 до 12 років, заставляють їх сміятися і думати, розбуджують їх цікавість та увагу до явищ природи." У казках Івана Яковича Франка під образами тварин висміюються люди з їх недоліками: жадібністю, невдячністю, жорстокістю і нечемністю, хитрощами і лінощами. У казках тварини з цими рисами характеру завжди покарані.
