"1984", dnes již klasické dílo antiutopického žánru, je bezesporu jedním z nejpozoruhodnějších románů 20. století a brilantní analýzou totalitních systémů. Britská společnost žije v roce 1984 pod nadvládou všemocné Strany. Hlavní hrdina Winston Smith, zaměstnanec Ministerstva pravdy, roboticky přežívá pod stálým dohledem Velkého bratra. Nepřetržité války a nedostatek základních potravin ještě přispívají k všeobecné duševní prázdnotě a mizérii. Winston Smith se zmůže na jedinou formu odporu: vede si tajný deník.
