Né en 1921, Léo Major grandit à Montréal durant la Grande Dépression. Aîné d’une famille nombreuse, il développe une relation conflictuelle avec son père et quitte la maison à 14 ans. Son père lui dit qu’il ne fera jamais rien de bon dans la vie: Léo va lui prouver le contraire. En 1940, il s’enrôle dans le Régiment de la Chaudière. Après un entraînement long et exigeant, il participe au débarquement de Normandie. Dès son arrivée en sol français, il multiplie les actions d’éclat.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill crossed the Rhine River on March 25th, 1945. His presence was calculated to emphasize the British role in the defeat of the Germans and to divert attention away from Patton and the Americans who had crossed the Rhine at Remagen two weeks earlier. Supreme Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower had warned his commanders that Churchill would seek to steal the limelight. My parents were an exceptional couple. Their characters and influence in the local community, the farming world, and in a much wider sphere were significant. My father’s contribution to the war effort in the Solomon Islands, and the well-deserved Silver Star awarded to him by the Americans, is a unique story that you will not find in many of the war histories. My mother also made a huge impact in her community and was awarded a QSM for her work.
