About this listen

The compelling WWII correspondence of Major Dick Winters, commander of the Band of Brothers.

Major Dick Winters of the 101st Airborne gained international acclaim when the tale of he and his men were depicted in the celebrated book and miniseries Band of Brothers. Hoisted as a modest hero who spurned adulation, Winters epitomized the notion of dignified leadership. His iconic World War II exploits have since been depicted in art and commemorated with monuments.

Beneath this marble image of a reserved officer is the story of a common Pennsylvanian tested by the daily trials and tribulations of military duty. His wartime correspondence with pen pal and naval reservist DeEtta Almon paints an endearing portrait of life on both the home front and battlefront - capturing the humor, horror, and humility that defined a generation. Interwoven with postwar reminiscences and rich historical context, Winters' letters offer compelling insights on the individual costs and motivations of World War II service members.

I’ve always been keen to learn more about those exceptional ‘Band of Brothers’. I wasn’t sure I’d like a book based on personal letters. How wrong I was. Once started I couldn’t stop listening. The story is fascinating and gives an insight into those true heroes. The narration was equally good. Can thoroughly recommend this to any with an interest in the subject.

The story of Dick Winters is very interesting. Knowing him from Band of Brothers it was great to hear him via his letters and see him as a more real person.
The narrator was so irritating. No effort was made to try and pronounce place names correctly to the point that I wasn't sure where he meant. A few minutes homework on his part to do this correctly wouldn't have gone amiss! He even managed to mispronounce English words. Flagrant is said flaygrant not flag grant...plus others. Shame.

Extremely interesting

Was just an amazing insight into the characters and time period. When listened to in conjunction with Band of Brothers it’s time we’ll spent

For someone who has been so written about, these personal letters have provided some great insights to how people were in those times. Really good.
