The story continues where Bloody Eventide, the first book in the Ember series, left off. Ember is still searching for Sandra, hunting the elusive Ashe, and plotting revenge and justice for her lost loved ones. She is far from the place that she once called home, but the apocalyptic world full of Fallen (dead that have risen, becoming something else) that she has known from birth is still the same, wherever she goes.

"A truth we all know...but agree not to talk about..." was how the Clapping Lady from the secretive Consilience Foundation described it to a teenage Methuen Pryce in 2012 as they discussed his Segmented World model. But it was also a "truth" that Nick O’Grady, ambitious young CEO of the high-tech Allied Answers, had not "talked about" - that was until he invited Methuen to his plush New York office in the summer of ’23.

A young woman begins her journey out of the Forsaken Wastes. She has a special gift that allows her to travel to other worlds (where an avid listener might meet some familiar characters, such as Ember from the Darkness Falls Trilogy). This woman may be a new hope and hero who can change this world for the better in time! Perhaps she will be destroyed by a prewar military robot, run down by a hover car, shot by the Federal Encorcement Death Squad (FEDS), or eaten by a Fallen in another world.
