Marines. The name alone carries weight. It conjures images of flag-raisers at Iwo Jima, drill instructors breaking down recruits on the training field, and Marines in crisp dress blues standing tall in ceremonies that echo with centuries of tradition. But behind the iconic photographs and battlefield legends lies a deeper, more human story. The U.S. Marine Corps: Boot Camp to Battlefields is that story told in full—an exploration of the history, traditions, challenges, and spirit of one of the world’s most respected fighting forces.

Boots and Saddles is an insightful glance into the 1870s life on a U.S. cavalry post in the Dakotas, penned by Elizabeth Custer. She paints a vivid picture of her isolated existence, likening it to living on a remote island. Elizabeth offers an affectionate portrayal of her husband, General George Armstrong Custer, praising his intellect and fondness for dogs. But this book is not just a tribute. It is an astute observation of the diverse characters that comprise the army “family”, from Indian scouts and enlisted men to officers wives. She tells a heartrending story about the ...

Not every western American town had a public cemetery nicknamed "Boot Hill". It required a lot of violent deaths for a cemetery to be called "Boot Hill". The first Boot Hill cemeteries were in the cattle towns of Hays and Dodge City, Kansas. Many of the cemetery occupants were cowboys who "died with their boots on" in gunfights, beatings, stabbings, and hangings. There are other famous Boot Hills in Tombstone, Arizona and Deadwood, South Dakota. Boot Hill cemeteries began as public cemeteries. The first victim likely arrived at the cemetery with a fatal gunshot wound.

From the deserts of North Africa to the mountains of Italy, 15men and women veterans of the Italian campaign open up about a war that was so brutal, news of it was downplayed at home. Here are the stories from a vanishing generation speaking to America today. The war in the Mediterranean, and particularly the Italian Campaign, is one that for many Americans is shrouded in mystery and murkiness. Yet it was here that the United States launched its first offensive in the west on enemy soil.

Boot Biters is a labor history podcast that strongly believes that history isn't boring and work shouldn't suck! We are witnessing an insane surge in labor organizing around the world and, of course, massive backlash to go along with it (and this is why we can't have nice things). Learning about the history of labor organizing is a first step toward understanding how we got here, how we got the protections we do have and how we hold on to them moving forward, and envisioning a world that treats workers with respect and dignity. From the first recorded labor strike in human history in Ancient ...
