It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Spencer Hayes, along with his girlfriend, Kate, and their dog, Finn, enjoy a life most people only dream about. Living aboard their 31-foot sailboat, Restless, they make the most of all that paradise has to offer. But that changes in the blink of an eye when EMPs strike the east coast of the United States.

Washington is gone. One strike erased the political center of the world. After that, everything began to fall apart. Communications failed. Satellites went silent. Fuel, medicine, and supply chains stopped moving. Electricity survives only in scattered places where small grids and generators still work. Cities struggle to function. Hospitals run out of supplies. Millions begin moving, searching for water, medicine, and safety. But the explosions were only the beginning. Disease spreads in crowded shelters. People with injuries receive no treatment.

America is changing fast. Cities are becoming dangerous. Time to bug out...Security Engineer, Logan Cahill, and a woman who may or may not be his girlfriend, Skylar Madigan, live together, but only because it makes their conspiring that much easier. Logan, like Skylar, is tormented by the notion that time is running out for America. Things are not as they seem, and the lid is about to blow off the whole city, maybe even the country. The question that plagues Logan is the question of when, and how. When does he bug out? How will he survive a total collapse of society?
