On a snowy winter evening, Christopher Ulwing returns to his long-ignored home, affectionately dubbed The New House for the past three decades. Nestled between the Buda hills and the expansive plains of Pest, the suburb of Leopold carries an air of abandonment. Tasked with restoring the castle, Christopher faces resistance from its current inhabitant—his son, John Hubert. Yet, young Anne’s joyful presence brings warmth and curiosity, prompting Christopher to reflect on his past as he embarks on this laborious renovation over several years. However, looming challenges accompany his efforts,...

The House at Old Vine is the second in a trilogy of novels by Norah Lofts about the inhabitants of a Suffolk house from the late 14th century to the middle of the 20th.
Covering the turbulent years of 1496 to 1680, it follows six generations of the descendants of Martin Reed, who founded the "House" dynasty through his act of rebellion in The Town House, through persecution, war, and revolution, from the era of Christopher Columbus to the Restoration of Charles II.

Story0
Somewhere in the street stood an old old house; it was almost three hundred years old, as you could tell from the date cut into the great beam. Tulips and hopbines and also whole verses of poetry were carved into the wood as people used to do in those days, and over every window a mocking face was cut into the beam. The second story hung way out over the ground floor, and right under the eaves was a leaden spout with a dragon's head. Rain water was supposed to run out of the dragon's mouth, but it came from his belly instead, for there was a hole in it.

There was once an old house that was so dilapidated that it made the other houses in the street ashamed. But, the little boy who lived opposite liked it a lot and loved looking at it day and night. The old man had the oldest house and the oldest home furnishings. All his friends had passed on, but an unlikely friendship develops between the old man and the young boy. The houses and home furnishings speak and create a unique atmosphere when the boy visits. Perhaps the old house is a suitable euphemism for the life we give to memories.

The best stories subtly weave themes and characters and symbols into a stunning final tapestry. For many Christians, sadly, the Old Testament is merely a jumble of moralistic stories and weird rituals, genealogies, and historical chronicles. What is the point of it all, and what does it have to do with Jesus? In this short and easy to listen audiobook, Leithart gives a sweeping overview of the Bible, its stories, and the patterns and symbols that recur throughout it, highlighting the ways many of the little stories look forward to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus himself.
