Epicurus of Samos (341-270 BCE) was the founder of the philosophical system to which he gave his name: Epicureanism. It is a label that is often misused and misunderstood today, with ‘a life of pleasure’ as the key aim misinterpreted as a life of indulgence. In fact, the philosophy of Epicurus demonstrated also by his life, was anything but! He established a school in Athens called The Garden, underpinned by his system of ethics.

These three sutras are the most important texts for the Chan (Chinese) and Zen (Japanese) Buddhist traditions, though they are very different in character and provenance. The Diamond Sutra (Vajracheddikā Prajña Pārāmitā Sutra in Sanskrit) has the distinction of being 'the earliest complete survival of a dated (11 May 868) printed book’. It was found in the Dunhuang Caves in China in 1900. The title, Diamond Cutter, outlines its purpose, which is to cut through ignorance to attain to perfect wisdom or ultimate reality.

Scholars have learned a lot more about the history of yoga in recent years, but their research can be hard to track down. Although their work is insightful, it is aimed more at specialists than at a general audience. The Truth of Yoga draws on many of their findings, presented in a format designed for practitioners. The aim is to highlight ideas on which listeners can draw to keep traditions alive in the 21st century.

In Dawn of All, the author expands on themes from his previous work, Lord of the World, by exploring potential developments in society over the next sixty years, should ancient thought—time-tested and increasingly rediscovered—gain prominence over modern ideologies. While the previous book painted a rather bleak picture for optimistic Christians, this new parable offers a more hopeful perspective. The author argues that every era is marked by the clash of opposing forces, and he delves into the implications of each sides potential dominance. Through this exploration, he seeks to illuminate...

It could be argued that few documents have had such a considerable effect on the course of world social and political history as the manifesto of the Communist Party written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and published in 1848. The social structures of the 19th century were undergoing considerable change yet even so it was over half a century before Communism claimed its first scalp with the 1917 Russian Revolution.

The Golden Bough A Study in Magic and Religion is an expansive comparative exploration of mythology and religion authored by the renowned Scottish anthropologist Sir James George Frazer (1854–1941). This groundbreaking work presents a modernist perspective, examining religion as a cultural phenomenon rather than through a theological lens. While many of its theories have been challenged over time—most notably the connections drawn between magic, religion, and science—the books influence on contemporary European literature remains profound. Frazer delves into the common threads of ...

In this profound work, Justin Martyr passionately defends Christianity, addressing the emperors—esteemed as just and philosophical figures—about the unjust persecution of Christians. He argues that Christians embody the true essence of philosophy and offer the only sacrifices truly worthy of God, the Creator. Through prayer and thanksgiving, they uphold moral integrity, inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ, whom they revere next to God. This compelling message emphasizes their belief in the resurrection and the transformative power of their faith in daily life.
