Singapore 1910: Harriet Gordon has been dismissed from the job she loved and finds herself cast adrift. The MOs are completely different, and it seems like the officers had no connection to each other, but one frightening fact links the murders. Each body was discovered with a single playing card: the lieutenant’s with the ten of hearts; the captain’s, the jack of hearts. The message seems clear—if the murderer isn’t apprehended, the higher ranks will be next.

Incoerenze, ingenuità, colpi di scena improbabili e sopra le righe, fino al surrealismo, che, però, fanno venire il dubbio (più che giustificato, se confrontato con le altre opere dello scrittore) che Wallace stesso abbia voluto ironizzare sullo stereotipo della donna “bellissima e spietata”. Ma soprattutto, dietro queste pagine, c’è tutta Hollywood, per cui Wallace ha scritto molte sceneggiature.
