The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one to see combat. The United States Army was small, understaffed, and disorganized in comparison to its status during the American Civil War roughly thirty years prior. Following the sinking of USS Maine, President William McKinley needed to muster a strong ground force swiftly, which he did by calling for 125,000 volunteers to assist in the war.

Big league baseball would seem to have been a hard sell in 1942. World War II was not going well for the United States in the Pacific and not much better in Europe. Moreover, the country was in drastically short supply of ships, planes, submarines, torpedoes, and other war materials, and Uncle Sam needed men, millions of them, including those from 21 through 35 years of age who had been ordered to register for the draft, the age range of most big league baseball players.

By the time Teddy Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, the Roosevelts were one of the most affluent families in America. Despite the fact that he was born into great wealth, Teddy’s parents tried hard to make sure that their son didn’t take his inheritance for granted. His father, Theodore Senior, who was himself a wealthy businessman, made it a habit to make sure that his son Teddy realized how blessed they were.
