A raw and often funny 12-month snapshot of seven-year-old Tommy's brutal young life. Moving us through his daily struggle with poverty and neglect in 1960s Manchester like it's the most natural thing in the world, Tommy lives at the heart of a large Irish family in derelict Hulme, ruled by an abusive and alcoholic father and a drunk, negligent mother.

Story53
Nick's favourite thing to eat aged 10 was his mother's stroganoff and as her alcoholism worsened, he began to learn to cook it himself, gradually taking over and using it as a magic trick to conjure up the very best bits of her - the stable, sober bits, which became harder to find as the years went on. This was the beginning of a lifelong love of process and technique, of escaping into a world of hisses, blips and thunks of a knife on a board.

This first loosely autobiographical book in the Mug Trilogy tells the story of Jersey-born Mug, a troubled girl from a recently broken home. It covers her experiences as a sixteen-year-old girl at the Isle of Wight Music Festival in 1970, the same year that she follows a guru. It describes her tumultuous years as an art student in Coventry, where vegetarian Mug finds herself living next door to an abattoir and railway shunting yard with David, a fellow art student. Dramatic events follow on from the evening they meet at a student party when Mug attempts to save David from attempting a very public drunken suicide attempt.

I'm Cara. Daughter of The King, wife to Mitchell, Mama to three of the coolest kids, and chaser of the sun. For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by the hearts and stories of people. Not just what appears on the highlight reel, but the raw, unfiltered and unguarded narratives that aren't always shared so boldly. It has been such a gift to be an ear, a shoulder, and a sounding board for those going through unyielding obstacles, and to be able to love them through it. That, to me, is paradise. Welcome to A Slice of Caradise! I'm so glad you're here.
