The era of the LP began in 1967, with Sgt Pepper; The Beatles didn’t just collect together a bunch of songs, they Made an Album. Henceforth, everybody else wanted to Make an Album. The end came only 15 years later, coinciding with the release of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. By then the Walkman had taken music out of the home and into the streets, and the record business had begun trying to reverse engineer the creative process in order to make big money. Nobody would play music or listen to it in quite the same way ever again.

Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to.

In October 1942, SS guards at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp violently disbanded a rehearsal of a secret Jewish choir led by conductor Rosebery d'Arguto. Many in the group did not live to see morning, and those who survived were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Only one of its members survived the Holocaust. Yet their story survives, thanks to Aleksander Kulisiewicz. An amateur musician, he was not Jewish, but became friends with d'Arguto in Sachsenhausen. D'Arguto tasked him with a mission: to save the musical heritage of the victims of the Nazi camps.

I suppose there were a few of us. The period from 1963 to 1970 was arguably one of the most dynamic periods for social change in the West. Some of us were either blessed or cursed to be teenagers during this eight-year period. Amid a hail storm of raging hormones and psychological uncertainty, I found that the Beatles were there to guide me through a personal upheaval that I wasn’t able to manage on my own. Their music and quirky media personae lent a steadiness to my teen years where there otherwise was none.
