Jacqueline Lee "Jackie" Bouvier Kennedy (July 28, 1929 to May 19, 1994), born in Southampton, NY, was the First Lady of the United States from 1961 to 1963, as the wife of John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States. She redefined the mostly ceremonial role into a platform for arts and culture, by hosting multiple high-profile events at the White House and leading its restoration into a historical site. Through her fashion and cultural literacy, she improved the global standing of the United States during the politically volatile Cold War.

Marcus Garvey (August 17, 1887-June 10, 1940) was a charismatic Jamaican-born political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator. He organized the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL) and acted as its president-general. In 1916, he moved to New York City where his prominence grew. By 1919, he was considered to be the "Black Moses", and he claimed a following of over 2 million people. This recording is from a speech he gave in the 1920s.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (November 30, 1874-January 24, 1965) was born in Oxfordshire, England, of mixed English and American parentage. He would become a statesman, soldier, and writer who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. "We Shall Fight On The Beaches" was a speech delivered by Churchill as the Prime Minister to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on June 4th 1940.

Vladimir Lenin (speaking Russian) was the main theoretician and practical leader of the Blosheviks. He was voted the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR. Leon Trotsky was a communist theorist, prolific writer, and leader in the 1917 Russian Revolution. Josef Stalin (speaking Russian) was the General Secretary of the Russian Communist Party and a key leader in World War II.

Margaret Hilda Thatcher (October 13, 1925 - April 8, 2013) was a British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the first female British prime minister and the longest-serving of the 20th century. A Soviet journalist dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little, later Malik el-Shabazz; May 19, 1925-February 21, 1965) was an American Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and '60s. A spokesman for the Nation of Islam until 1964, he was a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and the promotion of Islam within the Black community.

John Edgar Hoover (January 1, 1895 - May 2, 1972) was an American law enforcement administrator who, after being appointed by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924 as the fifth and final director of the Bureau of Investigation (BOI), became the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1935, where he remained until his death in May 1972—serving a total of 48 years leading both the BOI and the FBI under eight presidents.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (October 2, 1869 to January 30, 1948) was an Indian lawyer, thinker, anti-colonial activist, and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahātmā (from Sanskrit, meaning great-souled, or venerable), first applied to him in South Africa in 1914, is used worldwide.

Barry Morris Goldwater (January 2, 1909 to May 29, 1998) was an American politician and major general in the US Air Force, flying dangerous war zone supply routes overseas during World War II, who served as a United States senator from 1953 to 1965 and 1969 to 1987, and was the Republican Party's nominee for president in 1964. Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930-November 27, 1978), born in Woodmere, NY, was a US Navy veteran, businessman, and Democrat politician who, on November 8, 1977, became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. A year later, on November 27, 1978, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by disgruntled former City Supervisor Dan White in the offices of San Francisco's City Hall. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (October 27, 1858 - January 6, 1919) was an American politician, statesman, soldier, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He previously served as the 25th vice president under President William McKinley from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd governor of New York from 1899 to 1900. Assuming the presidency after McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt emerged as a leader of the Republican Party and became a driving force for anti-trust and Progressive policies.

A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as vice president from January to April 1945 under FDR and as a US senator from Missouri from 1935 to January 1945. Huey Pierce Long Jr. (August 30, 1893-September 10, 1935), nicknamed "The Kingfish", was an American politician who served as the 40th governor of Louisiana from 1928 to 1932 and as a United States senator from 1932 until his assassination in 1935. He was a left-wing populist member of the Democratic Party and rose to national prominence during the Great Depression for his vocal criticism of President Franklin D. When running as the third-party Progressive (Bull Moose) candidate for president of the United States in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt recorded a number of campaign speeches. Represented here are all of the cylinder recordings he made for the Edison Company in August of 1912, including "The Progressive Covenant with the People," "The Right of the People to Rule," "The Farmer and the Businessman," and "Social and Industrial Justice."

The Checkers speech was made on September 23, 1952, by Sen. Richard Nixon in Los Angeles, six weeks before the 1952 U.S. presidential election, in which he was the Republican nominee for Vice President. Nixon had been accused of improprieties relating to a fund established by his backers to reimburse him for his political expenses. His place was in doubt on the Republican ticket, so he flew to L.A. and delivered an address in which he defended himself, attacked his opponents, and urged the audience to contact the Republican National Committee to tell it whether he should remain on the ticket.

Gary Warren Hart (né Hartpence; born November 28, 1936) is an American politician, diplomat, and lawyer. He was the front-runner for the 1984 and 1988 Democratic presidential nominations, until in 1988, he dropped out amid revelations of extramarital affairs. He represented Colorado in the United States Senate from 1975 to 1987. The following is Hart's public announcement on May 8, 1987 that he was ending his presidential campaign.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882-April 12, 1945), also known as FDR, was the 32nd president of the United States, serving from 1933 until his death in 1945. The longest-serving U.S. president, he is the only president to have served more than two terms. His initial two terms were centered on combating the Great Depression, while his third and fourth saw him shift his focus to America's involvement in World War II. Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower (October 14, 1890-March 28, 1969) was an American military officer and statesman who served as the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. During World War II, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe and achieved the five-star rank as General of the Army. President Eisenhower delivered his first inaugural address on January 20, 1953.
