Ava didn't want to be right. Not about her city. Not about their leader, Chief Morray. But when Joseph gives her a secret journal from the past, the truth is revealed. She escapes with Joseph to the Outside, sending Chief Morray on an obsessive pursuit to retrieve his property. Ava has to decide if she should keep running, or return to the city center to save her people.

Seventeen years after the disappearance of former city center leader, Chief Morray there has been peace among the West Coast regions. But in Ojai Village, there is very little peace between Ava and her 16-year-old daughter, Grace. Both have different ideas about what it takes to maintain independence. Grace comes across some digital footprints inside the mainframe, convincing Ava that Morray is back to seek revenge and reclaim control.

The year 2039: A virus ravages the Earth. The year 2040: The caldera of Yellowstone National Park erupts and throws the world into six months of twilight. The year 2059: Across the world the homicide rate increases exponentially. In every city and town across the planet there is chaos. The letters DNA are found carved into every victim's forehead.

Six years ago, with the financial collapse of her country and the death of her parents, Carrie Ashworth swore to protect her siblings. She has fought to build a life for them in her illegal clan. Now home and recovering from a government-spread virus, she's ready to pursue a little happiness of her own - with Greg. Greg Pierce has no plan to join the growing rebellion or their "live free or die" mentality. Even after compulsory military service deepened his hatred of President Rigsby's regime, he wants nothing more than to leave it all behind and start a quiet life with Carrie.
