Story87
London, June 1965. Karl Braun arrives as a lodger in Pimlico: hatless, with a bow-tie, greying hair, slight in build. His new neighbours are intrigued by this cultured German gentleman who works as a piano tuner; many are fellow émigrés, who assume that he, like them, came to England to flee Hitler. That summer, Braun courts a woman, attends classical concerts, dances the twist. But as the newspapers fill with reports of the hunt for Nazi war criminals, his nightmares become increasingly worse.

Story0
Before the Broadway musical, before the film, there was the novel. Now you can listen to this original tale for yourself, and trace the origins of the mythic, and gruesome, Barber of Fleet Street. From November 1846 to March 1847, this story was published in eighteen weekly parts, initially under the title The String of Pearls: A Romance. This was part of the "penny dreadful" genre of literature, cheap, lurid, and sensationalistic fiction, aimed at a popular audience, at an affordable price. These would be sold for a penny in cigar shops and other such places.

In a dream landscape radiant with jewels, a father sees his lost daughter on the far bank of a river: "my pearl, my girl". One of the great treasures of the British Library, the fourteenth-century poem Pearl is a work of poetic brilliance; its account of loss and consolation has retained its force across six centuries. Jane Draycott in her new translation remakes the imaginative intensity of the original.

Here is the 18th-century classic about the "demon barber" of Fleet Street, London, who cuts the throats of his customers and disposes of the bodies in a most unusual way.

A beautiful facsimile of the 1923 original edition which is considered "one of the greatest poems of the twentieth century" by The New York Times. Spring and All is a manifesto of the imagination - a hybrid of alternating sections of prose and free verse that coalesce in dramatic, energetic, and beautifully cryptic statements of how language re-creates the world. Spring and All contains some of Williams' best-known poetry.
