Imagine being an innocent seven-year-old girl with a broke, single mum. Now imagine your mum meets a man who can give her a nice house and a better life in exchange for you. That’s what happened to me. For years, I suffered neglect and psychological and sexual abuse from him, with my mum being a silent witness. When I was finally able to get rid of him and escape, I didn’t know that my life was only going to get worse.

The Me Too movement, started by Black feminist Tarana Burke in 2006, went viral as a hashtag 11 years later after a tweet by White actor Alyssa Milano. Mainstream movements like #MeToo have often built on and coopted the work of women of color, while refusing to learn from them or center their concerns. Far too often, the message is not "Me, Too" but "Me, Not You". Me, Not You argues that the mainstream movement against sexual violence expresses a political whiteness that both reflects its demographics and limits its revolutionary potential.

This is a story of hope. It is my personal experience of childhood sexual abuse and its impact on me from childhood through to adulthood. It details how I used alcohol and drugs as a means of coping with the long-lasting harm of abuse and its impact on my life. It describes my journey down the destructive path of addiction until finally, with the loving support of my family, I was able to disentangle myself from the grip of alcohol and drugs and live free from the debilitating harm caused by childhood sexual abuse.

In Believe Me, contributors ask and answer the crucial question: What would happen if we didn't just believe women, but acted as though they matter? If we take women's experiences of online harassment seriously, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain, we will save countless lives.
