Mateo Falcone, ambientado esta vez en la isla de Córcega. El protagonista, que da título a la obra, es un brutal campesino de gatillo fácil que vive en compañía de su mujer y sus cuatro hijos. El más pequeño, Fortunato, es también el único varón y tiene tan sólo diez años. Un día, cuando éste se encuentra sólo en casa, llega a ella un bandolero herido al que persigue la policía. El muchacho accede a esconderlo a cambio de una moneda pero, cuando aparece aquélla, ante el ardid del sargento que le ofrece un bonito reloj como premio, Fortunato lo delata.

Mateo Falcone who was a respected landlord living in a rocky part of Corsica frequented by fugitives, leaves the responsibility of the house to his tenyearold son Fortunato while inspecting a sheep flock. In the absence of the father, a wanted fugitive named Gianetto wants to hide in the house knowing Mateo’s reputation. Wenig später taucht ein angeschossener Bandit auf dem Gut auf, der sich vor der Polizei verstecken möchte. Fortunato versteckt ihn daraufhin in einem Heuhaufen. Als die Polizei eintrifft, verneint Fortunato den Banditen gesehen zu haben.
