Written in 1819 but set in 12th-century England, Ivanhoe is a tale of love struggling to survive against a violent backdrop of politics and war. Wilfred of Ivanhoe was thrown out of his father's home when he fell in love with his father Cedric's ward, Lady Rowena. Ivanhoe later returns from fighting in the Crusades and is wounded in a jousting tournament. A series of events follows, including the return of King Richard to England, resulting in Ivanhoe's reconciliation with Cedric and his marriage to Rowena.

During the reign of Richard I, Wilfred of Ivanhoe earns his father's disapproval by falling in love with Rowena, his father's ward. His father had planned to wed her himself, and reestablish the Saxon line.

Publié en décembre 1819 en Angleterre (et début 1820 en France), Ivanhoé de Walter Scott est un énorme succès populaire. Inglaterra, siglo XII. Desterrado por querer casarse contra los deseos de su padre, el joven y valiente Wilfred de Ivanhoe se pone al servicio de Ricardo Corazón de León y parte como cruzado junto a sus tropas para reconquistar Tierra Santa. Twelfth-century England has become too dangerous for Jews, especially the beautiful Jewish healer, Rebecca Manasses, who has been rescued by Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe from being burned alive as a witch. Rebecca and her father, Isaac, make the difficult decision to flee to Spain where they have relatives. They settle in Toledo's Jewish quarter, and Rebecca is able to build a thriving practice as a healer.

Ivanhoe è considerato come il primo vero esempio di genere storico, e in esso, oltre alla figura di Ivanhoe, vengono presentate figure leggendarie come Robin Hood, frate Tuck, e Riccardo Cuor di Leone. All'inizio della vicenda, Scott dice che essa si colloca "verso la fine del regno di Riccardo I"; poiché Riccardo stesso compare nel romanzo, di ritorno in Inghilterra dalla Terza Crociata dopo la prigionia passata dal duce d'Austria; pertanto i fatti si collocano attorno al 1194. Le tematiche trattate sono molteplici e complesse.

Ny pragtudgave af den berømte Walter Scott-klassiker Ivanhoe. Med denne udgave er Mette Finderup gået tilbage til Scotts originalmanuskript fra 1820 og har arbejdet ud fra det i stedet for blot at modernisere allerede bearbejdede versioner. Mette Finderup har valgt at være så tro mod handlingen som muligt, men har især bearbejdet sproget, så både store børn og voksne i år 2019 kan få glæde af den vidunderlige ridderfortælling.
