Ida B. Wells is an American icon of truth telling. Born to slaves, she was a pioneer of investigative journalism, a crusader against lynching, and a tireless advocate for suffrage, both for women and for African Americans. She cofounded the NAACP, started the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago, and was a leader in the early civil rights movement. By the end of her life Craddock, the nemesis of the notorious vice crusader Anthony Comstock, had become a favorite of free-speech defenders and womens rights activists.

Ida Copeland's life was full of drama; her father's mysterious death by shotgun, an escape from Italy to Britain at the end of the 19th century, nursing in the first world war, fighting Britain's would-be dictator, Sir Oswald Mosley and becoming one of the first female Members of Parliament. It's a story worth listening to.
