The trials of love and desire provide perennial story material, from the biblical Song of Songs to Disney's princesses, but perhaps most provocatively in the romance novel, a genre known for tales of fantasy and desire, sex and pleasure. Hailed on the one hand for its women-centered stories that can be sexually liberating and criticized on the other for its emphasis on male-female coupling and mythical happy endings, romance fiction is a multimillion-dollar publishing phenomenon, creating national and international societies of enthusiasts, practitioners, and scholars.

It is said that a thing does not exist until we examine it, measure it. Fairy tales ask us what it means to be human, but it doesn't really answer the question. That is why we keep coming back to them, retelling them, exploring them again. Karen Nelson researched the stories in this collection in their many versions, often moving them forward in linear time or to other geographic locations, and retells them keeping their original themes and morals. Most notably, she looks at what might happen after the traditional closing of the original version.

Whatever its faults, the Indian bureaucracy cannot be accused of bias when it comes to confounding those who have to deal with it. Veteran insiders who return to it with their petitions after retirement are as clueless about how it functions as freshly minted supplicants. Outsiders in any case...
