Bilbo Beutlin, der kleine Hobbit, macht sich auf den Weg zum Einsamen Berg, um den rechtmäßigen Schatz der Zwerge zurückzuholen, den der Drache Smaug gestohlen hat. Als er auf seiner Reise einen Ring findet und ihn arglos einsteckt, ahnt er nicht, was für eine Rolle der Ring einmal spielen wird.

"Der Hobbit", erschienen 1937, ist Tolkiens erstes nichtwissenschaftliches Werk und gilt als Vorläufer der großen Trilogie "Der Herr der Ringe".
Wir lernen mit Bilbo Beutlin einen typischen Vertreter der Hobbits kennen, die laut Tolkien kleiner als die bösartigen Zwerge sind, dazu neigen, ein bisschen fett in der Magengegend zu werden, und außerdem (besonders nach den Mahlzeiten) tief und saftig lachen können. Dass ausgerechnet ein Anti-Held wie Bilbo - wenngleich nicht ganz freiwillig - zum Abenteurer wird, macht ihn uns erst recht sympathisch...
