Im post-revolutionären Ägypten bestimmt das Tor über das Schicksal der Menschen. Ein nicht näher benanntes Land im Nahen Osten: Seit der Niederschlagung der Revolution brauchen die Bürger für jede noch so kleine Kleinigkeit in ihrem Leben die Genehmigung des Staates - sei es für die Überweisung zum Arzt oder für die Erlaubnis, Brot zu kaufen. Um die zu erhalten, müssen sie sich vor einem riesigen Tor anstellen, das angeblich jeden Tag nur einer gewissen Anzahl an Anträgen stattgibt.

Rom im ersten Jahrhundert vor Christus: Auf einem Landgut nahe der Stadt unterwerfen sich zwei Patriziersöhne einem unmenschlich harten Drill.
