'The Signal' is the story of two peasants who work as track walkers on the railway, Semyon Ivanov and Vasily Stepanych. Semyon is grateful for his job and the hut and the vegetable patch which goes with it, but Vasily is discontented with his lot and constantly complains, including to his employers. This grumbling irritates the railway officials and eventually the situation escalates, driving Vasily to take terrible revenge on the state railway.

The Signal-Man is a haunting and suspenseful tale by Charles Dickens, exploring themes of isolation, fear, and the supernatural. In this eerie short story, a railway signalman shares his disturbing encounters with a ghostly figure that seems to warn of impending tragedies. As he confides in a passing traveler, the signalman reveals the chilling events that haunt him, leading to a terrifying conclusion.

Two short stories by Charles Dickens. 'Mr. Chops' is the story of a remarkable dwarf who once starred in a freak show and has an unrequited love for a fat lady. Having won a lottery, he attempts to enter high society, without success. 'The Signal Man' is a ghost story in which the central character has a premonition of his own death in a railway crash.

"The Signal Man" is a magnificent, tightly focused ghost story. Dickens' charm pervades this mysterious and ominous tale. Various grim events occur but feel somewhat calm - not bloody or appalling, but enthralling and other worldly. Dickens invests the signal-man with education beyond his station. This adds to the credibility of the story as well as impressing the narrator. A must-listen for Dickens fans. An American voice at the request of our listeners.
