Interestingly, she’s more focused on the Santas than her personal life, but only because she’s been warned that a proposal is imminent from her live-in love Eliot Kane and she needs to look somewhere else - anywhere else will do - rather than accept what he’s trying to offer. Avery never pictured herself married but it appears it might be happening...no matter how she tries to dodge and weave. The Santas make an enticing distraction, so Avery throws herself in with gusto.

When a local woman goes missing and is later found dead, Avery finds a tangled web of sex, lies, and...well...just overall freaky people to focus on. One man is identified by witnesses, but another may be guilty: the woman's husband.

When Avery's current assignment crosses paths with the story she wants to chase, things come to a head. There's a tangled web of steroids, obnoxious teenagers, and sketchy coaches to unravel. When you compound that with Grandpa and Mario's new business venture - they're running a traveling food truck and taking it to local high schools - Avery's tenuous grasp on reality is starting to fray.

Life should be good for Avery Shaw. She's got a hunky new boyfriend in local pawnshop owner (and sometime private detective) Elliot Kane, her cousin Lexie swears she'll be moving out of her house one day "real soon" and her family has been relatively quiet for a whole week. That's practically perfection in Avery's world. Then, what appears to be a random freeway shooting resulting in the death of a young mother, causes upheaval on just about every front.

It’s bad enough there's a dead body in the parking lot of the paper, but when the investigation into the death leads to drugs - and a tie to her own family - things continue to spiral downward. If she could focus on that, though, it would just be another normal week.

Unfortunately for Avery, when she discovers information that no one else has - and she finds herself on top of the media game - she has to make a decision, and that decision is going to tick off everyone she knows.

Halloween is Avery Shaw’s favorite time of year. What’s not to love? Slasher movies, hot chocolate, and corn mazes. She’s addicted to them all. During a visit to one of those mazes, she runs across several men trying to kidnap a teenage girl. In true Avery fashion, she intervenes...resulting in a severe injury. While she’s on the mend, she starts tracking information on a group of people working in the area.

There’s nothing Avery Shaw loves more than a challenge....at least when it comes to tracking down a story. The challenge she’s facing this time is the one thing she might not be able to overcome, though. Vacation. That’s right, not only is Southeastern Michigan’s busiest reporter off work for a week....but she’s also on the receiving end of a visit from her boyfriend’s mother. Eliot Kane is tough as nails but he’s obviously nervous about the two most important women in his life crossing paths.
