五章では、苦沙弥宅に深夜忍び入った泥棒に、夫婦も女中も熟睡して気が付かず、身の回りのものをごっそり持って行かれてしまった。「吾輩」は一部始終を目撃するも、ろくに注意喚起もできず、役立たずと人間どもから愚物扱いされる。そこで、鼠の一匹も捕ろうと決心するが、逆襲にあってしまった…。
