 「下 先生と遺書」では、開封した遺書の中身が記されている。「先生」は両親を亡くし、遺産相続で揉めたのち故郷と決別して、大学生活を送っていた。その下宿先には「奥さん」と「お嬢さん」が居て心地良かったが、想い悩んでいる親友の「K」を半ば強引にその下宿に住まわせることにした。それが悲劇のもととなったことを、先生は後で思い知ることになる。
Kは、大学での進路が養家の考えに背くことになったために深刻な不和が生じ、仕送りが途絶えたことから、自ら志す仏教の道が思うようにいかなくなった。自覚しないままに心身が蝕まれていた。それを奥さんとお嬢さんが醸し出す穏やかな空気によって癒してやろうというのが先生の思惑だった。ところがKは、やがてお嬢さんに強く惹かれるようになり、志したはずの道との相克に深刻に思い悩むようになった。
先生は、もともとお嬢さんに惹かれ、大学卒業したら結婚を申し込むことを密かに考えていたために、Kの気持ちを知った後は、Kとお嬢さんとが少し話をし、帰路にたまたま一緒になって歩いていたことさえ、嫉妬心を抱くようになった。そしてKが、奥さん、お嬢さんに気持ちを伝えることはないだろうかとの焦りから、遂にはKに知らせないままに、奥さんにお嬢さんとの結婚を申し込んでしまう。そしてそれが、Kを、また先生を悲劇へと導く事になる。
