By the time Shakespeare came to write Macbeth - almost certainly in 1605/1606 - he had already completed three of the great tragedies with which modern audiences are so familiar: Hamlet (1601), Othello (1603), and King Lear (1605). Urged on by the equally determined Lady Macbeth, he kills the king and seizes the crown. Yet victory quickly turns to torment. Haunted by guilt and driven by fear, Macbeth descends into paranoia and violence, while Lady Macbeth is consumed by her own unraveling conscience. What begins as a prophecy becomes a relentless spiral toward destruction. In this complete reading, Shakespeare's language unfolds with full intensity.
