Last week, investigative journalist Mandy Matney showed up in Cherokee County Courthouse in Gaffney, South Carolina, for a hearing related to her request that her deposition in the Mallory Beach civil conspiracy case be held in the offices of her lawyers or Beaufort County Courthouse — somewhere secure. But when the hearing began, the attorneys of billionaire gas station owner Greg Parker — who is a defendant in the case — AMBUSHED Mandy, a non-party in the case. Instead of the court hearing arguments in favor of each side’s motions, Debbie Barbier immediately called Mandy to the stand in a highly unusual and confusing move that was clearly meant to intimidate, silence and berate a journalist whose opinions Greg Parker doesn’t like. Debbie, by the way, is not only one of Greg Parker’s many attorneys in this case but also the attorney for Alex Murdaugh co-conspirator Cory Fleming. Interesting how that came around, right?
