    Show Notes

Leaders have to coach, counsel, encourage and motivate. How we say what we say matters.

By first writing down our thoughts we  become better speakers, teachers, mentors, and coaches.

Issues in speaking (and teaching, mentoring, and coaching) come from a lack of clear, concise communication.

Our words, and tone, need to come from our gut.

Before we respond it's critical to take time to listen to the other person. Actively listen to what is said.

When speaking publicly in person arrive early enough so you can talk to people in the audience. Make sure your talk is going to resonate by asking what brought them today, what they hope to learn, what their experience has been, etc.

When speaking on Zoom, arrive early and engage with people there. Use the chat. Invite people to answer your questions in the chat so you can hear from more people. Ask the same questions you would in a live event.

During your talk, when telling your stories, do it in a way that makes the person who is listening see themselves in the story (i.e. the same thing happened to me! Or, I feel the same way). Be relatable.

Be yourself and connect with the people who resonate with you and your story. You don't need to try to be anyone else (like a speaker you admire or who has trained you).

Use your facial expression and gestures to connect with people. Vary your expression, your tone, and your energy.

Make your talk like a song. Songs have hooks, verses, choruses, bridges, dynamics, intros, and outros.  Listen to music and notice all the ways songs keep you engaged. Use the same ideas to make your talk engaging and keep people leaning in.

Listen to the radio announcers to understand vocal variety.

    Show Notes:

Feeling depressed ranges from feelings of sadness to feelings that life is no longer worth living. Robin is not a doctor but she has been directly impacted by the outcomes of severe depression when her beloved Aunt Judy ended her life several years ago.

In this micro episode, Robin asks hard questions, triggering questions, not to make you feel worse but to get underneath the hood and potentially expose what's operating beneath the surface of feeling depressed.
