    Feb 8 2018

[Contains explicit content] It's called the Dark Web, Dark Net or Deep Web but what is it? What makes this internet underground — rife with drugs, sex, and crime — possible? How do you even access the Dark Web?

Geoff White, Channel 4 News's former Technology Reporter, has been looking into its shady origins and reveals why the U.S. Navy invented it in the first place.

Geoff White, Channel 4 News's former Technology Reporter, speaks with a key player at the heart of the takedown. His story is astonishing.

  • Ep. 3: Bitcoin's Days Are Numbered
    Feb 8 2018

[Contains explicit content] If money makes the world go around, then Bitcoin keeps The Dark Web spinning. But what it is and how does it work? How can you run a currency based on trust when everyone who uses it is anonymous?

Geoff White, Channel 4 News's former Technology Reporter, uncovers the mystery of Bitcoin — and speaks to the Royal Mint about this potential competitor currency.

Good for an introduction to the basic facets

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Audio quality was somewhat poor, especially in certain interviews. I'd describe it as mobile-phone grade recording. Overall, I felt it was a good first introduction to the issues hosted on the Dark Web. However, it is also highly sensationalised, which is somewhat ironic considering episode 9 features an interview about whistleblowing which details how people are less likely to approach journalists who simply write "DARK WEB BAD!", which is almost exactly what is happening in this series. I would recommend the series to those wanting an overview of the negative aspects of the Dark Web, but if you want more technical information and a balanced view of the non-insidious activities which take place, look elsewhere.

Fascinating history

I have a computer science background and whilst I had a passing understanding of technologies like Tor and bitcoin, the history of the technology was new to me and very well presented. The Silk Road saga typically takes all the headlines so was grateful to get a broader picture of what's really going on across the so called "dark web". Unsurprisingly there's plenty of murky goings-on if you know where to look, but it manages not to get too think-of-the-children overly dramatic despite lengthy focus on the shadier topics typically associated with the dark web.

Episodes rattle along at a nice pace. Being a geek I wouldn't have minded a little more detail of the underlying tech, but I expect I'm the minority!

A fascinating show and leant far more than I expected.

An insightful 10-part documentary 5*

An insightful 10-part documentary by Technology journalist, Geoff White (Channel 4 News).

I learnt a lot.

1. The birth of the dark web
2. The untold story of the dark web
3. Bitcoin’s days are numbered
4. How not to buy a gun on the dark web
5. Hackers for hire
6. The virus kingpin
7. Cyber crime Inc.
8. The child porn paradox
9. A dark force for good
10. Anonymity on trial

Found everything brilliant except part 10 (34 minutes); a group of knowledgeable people discuss anonymity and the dark web. Compared to what preceded it, this episode was rather dull.

A good hack of my time!

This is, as with most explorations into the dark side of humanity, poses the age old question: is it the tool that is bad or the person using it? I for one really enjoyed listening to this & was quite surprised by much of what I heard but it's at the end, where the narrator poses the question of whether in the future we'll all be surfing the net anonymously due to a percieved 'threat' to our privacy, that really got to me.

I would highly recommend this to those who already know alot about the Dark Web as well as those just looking for an entertaining listen.

Not balanced

Started off quite promisingly, but descended into "look how bad all these people are doing illegal things" and ended with a boring panel session, rather than a look ahead at where the Dark Web could be going.

A great introductory series into the dark web

This show takes you right to the start of how the dark web was born, and how it's changed and where it is today. The show features interviews that provide lots of information without feeling academic. It is well produced and goes at a pace that leaves you both entertained and informed. A great background listen. I highly recommend this.

way too much background noise

it is difficult to listen to some of the interviews, duee to too much background noise, despite that some of the stories are interesting. so far the author does not really go deep into the topic.

Definitely worth a listen

A good, balanced discussion around a complex and polarising subject that informs and turns the spotlight onto.
