  • The Last Jedi: Addressing the Criticisms That Still Divide Star Wars Fans
    Jun 30 2026
The Last Jedi remains the most polarizing Star Wars movie ever made. Love it or hate it, Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII triggered one of the biggest fan backlashes in franchise history — and the arguments haven’t slowed down nearly a decade later.

In this episode we directly address the criticisms that refuse to die:
    • Luke Skywalker’s shocking portrayal as a broken hermit who failed his students
    • The decision to make Rey’s parents “nobodies” instead of tying her to existing legacy characters
    • The casino planet subplot on Canto Bight and whether it was a waste of runtime
    • Vice Admiral Holdo’s command style and the infamous hyperspace ram
    • Killing Supreme Leader Snoke far too early in the trilogy
    • Finn and Rose’s arc and the larger themes of failure, hope, and subversion

We examine which criticisms hold weight, which ones miss the point, and how The Last Jedi fits (or clashes) with George Lucas’s original six-film saga and the themes Dave Filoni and others have carried forward. This isn’t about declaring a winner in the fandom war — it’s about understanding why the movie hit so many people so hard and whether it was bold storytelling or a miscalculation.

Whether you walked out of the theater in 2017 loving it, hating it, or feeling confused, this conversation is for you.

Which criticism of The Last Jedi do you think is the weakest? Which one still bothers you the most? Let us know in the comments or on X @TatooineSons — we actually read and engage with them.

  • The Last Jedi: Episode VIII Theories & The Dangers of Headcanon
    Jun 23 2026
    We’re going back.

Way back to the two-year stretch between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi — the most intense, creative, and at times toxic period of Star Wars fandom most of us have ever lived through. In this episode the Tatooine Suns crew relives the glory days of hot-tub trailer breakdowns, Celebration overflow rooms, Mike Zero “sources,” and the Rey parentage wars that consumed the internet.

We walk through every major theory that ruled YouTube, Twitter, and Reddit: Rey Skywalker, Rey Kenobi, Rey Solo, Rey Palpatine, Rey as a Nobody, Snoke as Darth Plagueis, Mace Windu, Gallius Rax, Luke turning evil, the Rey/Kylo flip, the Knights of Ren, and what “The Last Jedi” title was really supposed to mean.

But we don’t just laugh at the old theories — we get honest about what two years of heavy headcanon did to us. How it set expectations so high that when Rian Johnson subverted almost all of them, the fandom fractured. We talk about the real emotional impact that had on longtime fans and share how we’ve learned to enjoy the hype without letting it ruin the movie.

It’s part nostalgia trip, part cautionary tale, and 100% Tatooine Suns — warm, reflective, and willing to call the fandom on its nonsense while still loving every ridiculous minute of it.

Perfect for anyone who lived through 2015–2017 or wants to understand why that era still feels so charged today. What theory were you convinced was going to happen?

Tell us in the comments or tag us @TatooineSons.

Listen, laugh, and remember: headcanon is fun… until it isn’t.

New episodes weekly. May the Force be with you. Always.

  • The Last Jedi: The Documentary that Never Should Have Happened
    Jun 16 2026
The most transparent behind-the-scenes documentary in Star Wars history is buried in the Disney+ extras tab — and almost nobody knows it's there.

The Tatooine Sons dig deep into The Director and the Jedi, the remarkably raw documentary chronicling the making of The Last Jedi, and make the case that it's essential viewing for anyone who has an opinion on this film — especially if that opinion is negative.

This is a documentary where the guy who played Luke Skywalker tells the director, on camera, that he fundamentally disagrees with the entire characterization of his character. Where you watch Rian Johnson arrive on set every single day with the pure joy of a Star Wars fan who can't believe he gets to be there. Where a practical Yoda puppet — built from the original mold, operated by Frank Oz — becomes the moment Mark Hamill's entire resistance quietly breaks.

And it's a documentary that Disney would never make today. The absence of anything remotely similar for The Rise of Skywalker says everything about what the backlash to The Last Jedi actually cost the franchise.

    In this episode:
    • Why The Director and the Jedi is impossible to find (and where it's actually hiding on Disney+)
    • What radical transparency looks like when a studio actually means it — and what it cost them afterward
    • Mark Hamill's real arc through production: from open skeptic to true believer, and the exact moment it turned
    • The Yoda puppet, the Snoke throne room, 140 practical sets, and a director who fought for every single one
    • Rian Johnson's joy and the tragedy of the fandom pushing him into silence
    • The Sequel Trilogy's unfinished business — and the animated series that could change everything
    • Why The Rise of Skywalker has no documentary, no commentary, no extras — and what that tells you
    • Our honest recommendation: watch this before you rewatch the movie
If you've never seen The Director and the Jedi, this episode will make you drop everything and find it. If you have, you know exactly why we had to talk about it.
