  • Vasovagal Syncope (Fainting/Passing Out)
    Jun 18 2026

Vasovagal syncope is one of the most common causes of fainting, yet many people know very little about it. It occurs when the body’s nervous system overreacts to a trigger, causing a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure. This can reduce blood flow to the brain, leading to symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, tunnel vision, weakness, near-fainting, or fainting. While episodes are often brief, the condition can have a significant impact on daily life.

In this episode, we discuss how vasovagal syncope works, common symptoms and triggers, and the role of the vagus nerve. We also explore why some people notice worsening symptoms during illness, heat exposure, exhaustion, or menstrual cycles. Understanding what is happening inside the body can help reduce fear and make it easier to recognize warning signs before an episode occurs.

I also share some of my personal experiences living with vasovagal syncope, including strategies that have helped me manage symptoms. While everyone’s experience is different, learning your triggers, staying aware of your body’s signals, and working with your healthcare team can make living with this condition feel much less overwhelming.
