  • Bruthas On Tennis Podcast - Episode 284 - Do You Know Jimmie McDaniel?
    Mar 28 2026

Before there was an Althea Gibson or an Arthur Ashe, there was Jimmie McDaniel. Largely regarded as the greatest Black male tennis player in the pre-World War 2 era, his achievements were largely overlooked due to the enforcement of segregation in American tennis.

We had the privilege to interview his great nephew, Craig Nobels, about Jimmie's legacy, influence, and groundbreaking achievements that led to the successes of the Black American tennis champions we revere today. Craig is the producer of the documentary "Love All: The Jimmie McDaniel Story" and helps lead the Jimmie McDaniel Legacy Foundation. This organization is aimed at helping young tennis players of color access opportunities that were largely denied to earlier generations like his uncle.

The winner of multiple ATA National Championships in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Jimmie symbolizes the lost generation of elite Black tennis players whose talent was limited by segregation, yet whose success helped pave the way for later champions. Listen in to learn more about his story!
