A Different Perspective is a Zeus podcast, hosted by Nick Searle, Head of Equity Capital Markets. In the different perspective podcast we speak to interesting characters within finance and business to understand more about their personal journey and ambitions. This is co-mingled with a discussion about their business. It’s more about the formation of the individual than the business per se; thus trying to gain that different perspective. • A Different Perspective: Chris McVey on the Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity in UK Small & Mid-Cap Stocks
    Jun 30 2026

This week Nick talks to Chris McVey.

Chris McVey is Deputy Head of Octopus Quoted Companies at Octopus Investments, where he has worked since 2016 and is lead manager of the Octopus UK Multi Cap Income Fund. He has more than 20 years of experience in the UK quoted smaller companies market. Prior to joining Octopus, Chris was a UK small- and mid-cap equity research analyst at Citigroup, and before that spent seven years at Gartmore as an investment manager and analyst, building extensive expertise in UK smaller company investing.

Nick and Chris discuss the significant opportunity in the UK small and mid-cap market, where valuations remain near historic lows despite strong underlying company fundamentals. Chris argues that quality growth businesses, particularly on AIM, are trading at substantial discounts to their intrinsic value due to a lack of investor flows rather than operational weakness. He believes the sector is poised for a re-rating as sentiment improves, creating an attractive entry point for long-term investors.

An absolute gem in the podcast realm. Its thought-provoking content on various topics is delivered by engaging guests who have a wealth of knowledge interesting and unique life experiences. Nick does the very simple but difficult thing to achieve in just letting his guess tell there story without adding his bit to everything they say. In my opinion, some other podcast are hosted by people who’s main purpose is to make themselves look good and it can spoil it by steering the conversation in different directions. Not this one Nick is a fantastic host and he gets the best very best from his guests. It’s a must-listen for those seeking intellectual stimulation and a genuinely different point of view.
