About this listen

"Few venture as thou hast in the alarming paths of sin."

Satan’s final judgement on Victoria sums up a shocking novel, set in Venice at the end of the 15th century, that tracks the path of its heroine from abused victim to fully fledged criminal. Her conscious embodiment of vice seems to know no limits. Depicting unfettered desire and gratuitous cruelty, and challenging taboos of race and class, this tale of lust, betrayal, and multiple murder has Dacre moving beyond the limits of contemporaneous gothic heroes (e.g. Matthew Lewis’ Ambrosio) into a truly hellish zone of her own.

This is a hilarious drama filled with vice and sin, but nothing that anyone today would gasp at to read or hear. Still, it's highly entertaining as we follow Victoria on her sure path to a fate beyond redemption. It's dramatic (emphasised by a rather comical narration for all of the women, which I didn't personally care for), deliciously dark, and Zofloya is a fantastic seducer. I enjoyed both him and Victoria immensely.

I don't agree at all that the book teases the issues of race and class as the summary suggests, as Victoria is never Zofloya's lover, or even interested in him in that way (which was disappointing to find out through reading). But that's not the fault of the book.

Very entertaining
